This week we ask Simon: How do I make my portfolio stand out?

Straco_Group_recruitment

A portfolio is a huge selling point for any professional in the creative industry, it’s a fantastic opportunity to sell yourself and show what you are capable of.  Simon share his advice on how you can achieve a portfolio that really stands out.

  1. Be selective about the work your showcase – Don’t overdo it – sometimes it pays to be ruthless, something I have learnt over the years while running my own business. Make sure you focus on showcasing the best and most relevant projects you’ve worked on.
  2. Keep it fresh – Who wants to see a portfolio that’s full of old work? Portfolios need constant attention, and regular updates are crucial, so make sure you have a regular spring clean once a year!
  3. Demonstrate allround experience – Everyone has more than one skill so make sure you really showcase all those skills, the more eggs in your basket the better (makes a much better omelette!). Employers are always looking for all-singing, all-dancing professionals to join them.
  4. Include case studies – Show exactly how you go about achieving a project to demonstrate how professionally capable you are. Throw in a few client recommendations too for good measure, it all reflects well on you.
  5. Index your portfolio – Make your portfolio easy to navigate by including page numbers and clear project titles for each portfolio example. They say it takes 5-7 seconds to form an opinion about a CV, and it’s no different for a portfolio.  Make those seconds count and make it easier on the employer, I know from personal experience that time is precious when you are a busy professional!
