Having spoken about promotions earlier in the year, I thought I would revisit this topic as it’s something I am passionate about. On a personal note, I love to see my staff work hard, develop and succeed within the business. Recently, I promoted Craig, one of my Recruitment Consultants, to Associate Consultant, and I would like to go through the reasons I did, and the reasons you could get a promotion too.
Become an asset to the company: If you are looking for progression you need to show your value and what you can add to the company. Craig always hit targets, made sure he was commercially aware at all times, communicated any relevant market knowledge or leads and got involved in all aspects of the business.
Do a great job: This doesn’t refer to just your role within the company, although that is a big part of it, it also refers to good attendance, punctuality and a willingness to go the extra mile when the company needs it. I love being kept in the loop and knowing my employees are doing all that they can to get things done, all bosses do. Craig is always very open with what’s happening on his desk and how he was overcoming any obstacles.
Develop your skillset: The more strings to your bow the better and the more of an asset you become. Get to know other areas of the business to develop a better understanding, exactly what Craig did. Having been in the business for several years, he has made it his business to really get to know the business.
Be a team player: Teamwork is a huge part of my business, and almost every other business. It’s vital to be a team player and communicate well with others, developing relationships with co-workers and increasing your value to the company. Show your face at company events – it shows you enjoy being part of the team. Craig is definitely a vital part of our team and is always happy to join in any social events.
Be vocal about your achievements: At the end of the day I’m not a mind reader, and neither is any other boss as far as I am aware. Let us know when you have a win within your role as it shows you are excelling in your role. Or if you have an idea to improve the business, it shows you care about the company. It makes a difference to an employer if you take a real pride in your job and an interest in the company you work for, things that I admire in Craig.
