We got the low down on Simon, our Recruitment Director who heads up Straco’s Interiors Desk as well as taking care of the whole team on a daily basis… Here’s what we found out about his industry views and how he runs Straco!
If you had to describe your job in one word what would it be?
Engaging
What is the best part of your job?
I’d say the best, and most satisfying part of my job is when I get a new opportunity from a client who hasn’t been able to fill it through other sources, and then I go and fill it within a week! My excellent contacts and exceptional candidates always put me ahead of the game.
What is the worst part of your job?
Unfortunately, I’d have to say the let downs; when candidates hold back on amazing roles, as well as the constant news in the background. That can always be a downside.
Do you have any interests outside of work?
Music and fitness are just a few things I enjoy in my free time. My family are very important to me, I have three children under 13… so holidays with a pool and a decent bar are always a great idea for us!
What motivates you to get up in the morning?
We have created a brand here at Straco, so the buzz that comes from that, as well as working with my fun team never fails to wake me up and get me excited for what each day holds.
Tell me a bit more about the industry you recruit within.
Interiors… I used to be a coach builder many moons ago. I could argue that my market utilises a similar feel, with coach building we would design and build the coach from nothing, using lots of different materials. Interiors using all sorts of substrates to create amazing final products. I really enjoy the end result of restaurants, bars and shops and will always admire great work when I’m out and about.
Do you have any top-tips for anyone wanting to start out in the Interiors industry?
The main thing is to remember that there will be A LOT of hard work. I started out with nothing but a phone and a fax machine. I did plenty of research and got to know everything and everyone I possibly could. My main motto is to get to know the market you are in and to always have a keen interest in it. Don’t bother starting out with something if your hearts not truly in it.
What about people who want to develop their career in the industry further?
Always be driven and never be afraid to argue your point, if you feel 100% certain about a decision then go with it. It will allow you to get noticed by employers and highly recognised companies.
If you could have any job in the industry what would it be and why?
I honestly wouldn’t want any other job. I truly love my job heading up Straco. I work in a vibrant market that’s forever changing, every day is different to the next.
Are there any ‘shining stars’ in the industry who stand out and are achieving big things?
I work with a Company called Harlequin Design who have an extremely good Account Director. She is very on the ball and amazing at looking after the company. Another star is Chris who does HR at JD, he very much knows his industry and is always passionate about the brand he works for, he gives thorough and detailed feedback to us and has a very straight-talking approach.
Do you have faith in your industry, and why?
Yes, very much so. It’s all about creativity. The companies that do well always have the best designs, if it looks good the product will sell no matter what it is! I often go in to trendy bars and retail outlets that feel and look good. Brands and retailers are finally starting to understand this concept of engaging with the customer. It is very rare that you will be a high valued brand just from an online shop, customers love to feel in place at a restaurant or store.
What is the best piece of work you have seen by one of your clients?
Cheil recently did the new Samsung store at Kings Cross Station, an outstanding three-story building. This kind of thing is the pinnacle of what the brand is all about.
What would you say your proudest moment of your Straco career so far is?
The best moment was definitely seeing my company name sponsoring an award and seeing a celebrity hold our brochure, and even saying our name correctly! (It can be difficult!)
What has been your funniest Straco moment so far?
Gosh, there are too many to mention, we have a laugh a minute here! I employ people with a sense of humour because of how the market is, and how tough the job can be. However, one moment stands out above the rest. I don’t want to mention any names, but let’s just say one member of staff did do a Dell Boy in a bar full of clients. It was hilarious!
Who is your favourite person to work with, and why?
Candidates that get back to you, and clients that really appreciate what we do. I like someone who really looks at things with an open mind. Other than that… obviously my team here at Straco!
If you don’t see a role for you, still send us your CV because new opportunities arise all the time and you might just be what our client is looking for.
