Design Engineer

JOB REF: 4902

in INTERIORS & FIT OUT

Permanent Northamptonshire £NEG DOE

About

We’re partnering with a dynamic and growing company that’s been a game-changer in the UK retail industry since 2004. The company set out with a mission to offer a more transparent, consultative approach to working with retailers, giving them full ownership and control of their projects.

Starting with a flagship store design for a major UK retailer in Kensington, they quickly became known for their innovative design and high-quality installations, securing contracts with well-known brands like The Body Shop and Carphone Warehouse.

As the company continues to grow, they are looking for a talented Design Engineer to join their team. If you’re someone who thrives in an agile, creative environment and enjoys working on innovative projects for top-tier brands, this is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact, while contributing to their continued success.

Job Role

  • Develop concept designs into 3D visuals, through full design development and into pre-production
  • Produce all required documentation, including presentations, detailed drawings, specifications, instruction sheets, end-of-life documents, and electronic files
  • Create a comprehensive drawing pack with attention to detail, including Bills of Materials, general assemblies, sub-assemblies, and individual part breakouts, aiming for a “right first time” approach
  • Strong understanding of key manufacturing processes such as sheet metal/metal fabrication, injection moulding, acrylic fabrication, joinery, vacuum forming, and various print processes
  • Experience with LED integration and digital displays is a plus
  • Solid material knowledge, including sheet yields, manufacturing tolerances, material costs, and availability, with a focus on balancing quantity and quality
  • Take ownership of projects, fully understanding the client’s design vision and concepts
  • Collaborate with the approved manufacturing base to determine the best design/engineering practices to meet the design brief
  • Proficient in 3D modelling using Autodesk Inventor or Dassault Solidworks
  • Receive and interpret briefs from the Design Manager, agreeing on objectives and timelines
  • Work within agreed timescales to meet project goals and proactively communicate any issues that may affect scheduling
  • Ensure development, prototype, and manufacturing costs align commercially, consulting with the Design Manager for approval before proceeding
  • Support fitting teams and project managers during delivery and installation to ensure proper assembly and adherence to procedures
  • Initiate, order, and oversee prototype development, manufacture, and assembly for each project
  • Have a hands-on approach to on-site installation procedures, assembling and critiquing prototypes, and applying learnings to the final production proposal

Skills and Experience

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and visual, when liaising with suppliers
  • Provide cover for Design Engineers during holidays or busy periods as needed
  • Regularly complete timesheets
  • Excellent problem-solving and organisational skills
  • Passion for design and innovative concepts
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to project demands
  • Answer the phone politely and professionally, handling calls or taking messages as required
